Dog Walking : Titan

Introducing a beautiful 8 month of white German Shepherd called Titan. He's lovely, attentive, extremely smart and an adorable dog. He is 28 kilos and already very large, but he has such a soft heart. He's scared of other dogs (even a tiny yorky), people and large items such as rubbish bags!! Still young and new to his surrounding environment (coming to HK just 4 months ago), quite natural to be skittish at this age.

Pitter Patter Pet Care has been trying to build his confidence, but it seems that he has been through some kind of traumatic experience when he was younger or simply not used to being exposed to such an overwhelming number of sights and smells. We're determined to help Titan overcome his fears...

Titan! You can do it!

Cat Sitting : Holly & Molly

Introducing Holly (Blue & Cream) and Molly (Blue)...adorable, quirky and rather chubby British Short hair cats that were taken care of over the X'mas hols. Molly is definitely the active one, constantly running up and down the hall way, jumping at least 1 meter off the ground to catch her toy...often times she's seen peering at the sink waiting for the tap to be turned on...she doesn't just lick the water but she twitches her head and then bites at it!! She's a funny one :)

Holly is more gentle, more apt to wanting to get stroked (lifting up and rubbing her head in the cup of your hand), she's the first one to greet you at the door with a loud prrrrr and also first one to the plate of fresh cat food! Holly is often times seen plonked in the center of the sofa (sometimes rubbing her bum, itchy I presume!).

Holly and Molly, absolutely adorable....

Dog Poisoner is Back.

The last few days we have seen the return of the Bowen Road dog poisoner, already claiming up to 200 pets in more than a DECADE on the loose....

It makes me wonder why this happens every year and for so long? Why the Hong Kong government or SPCA do no further to investigate this case, monitor and track the person(s) down? How much longer will this go on where countless of loving pets get killed for no reason every year?

A possible suggestion is for under-cover police officers or SPCA team to be posted over-night for a period of a week on Bowen Road. Installation of camera's in this area would also be a good idea. If it is a known fact that a high dosage of pesticide laced meat is used to kill the dogs, what brand? What does it look like? Can it be easily obtained? These questions remain unanswered to the general public. Would it be possible that someone working in the pest control department or a company be doing this since I've seen them with huge tanks drowning plants at the end of Po Shan Road, the smell is unbearable. I think not, so why is it taking more than a decade and no closer to catch this sick killer?

In Response to the Animal-Friendly Policy

SPCA has come up with a detailed response regarding the formulation of an animal-friendly policy presented during the Legislative Council meeting at the beginning of this month (Nov. 2010). Please click on the following link: SPCA comment

PPPC notes and response is as follows:
- We favor AFCD to pursue an Open Adoption policy to the public.
- TNR (more in favor of Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return) for both stray dogs and cats should be more active and part of the governmental responsibility to control the population of stray animals in Hong Kong. Additionally, more strict rules and monitoring of dogs at construction sites must be carried forward.
(b) SPCA and the HK police force should collaborate and work together to eradicate unlawful animal cruelty and abandonment. SPCA team has more the knowledge in the correct handling and treatment of animals, yet unable to gain access to certain areas. Therefore they should either be allowed entry without permission from the police or establish a more concrete guideline tying the two teams together.

The HK police usually acts too late in most cases and therefore needs to upgrade and improve the system to prevent such unlawful acts prior to it happening. Constant monitoring and investigation of such areas, syndicates and individuals prior to acts of cruelty or abandonment should be implemented.

(d) The Hong Kong government needs to improve and enforce a more stricter rule and regulation for microchipping. Especially pet shops, breeders and such organizations (which too be honest, should actually be eradicated).

(e) We oppose SPCA's comment regarding animal rights organizations to inspect animal management centers. Some organizations, especially those run by individuals without prior knowledge or experience in the field of shelter management and their lack of funding, needs to be supported by the government or at least given a set of shelter rules, regulations and/or guidelines. Inspections of such organizations by professionals need to be conducted to maintain good management and well-being of the animals being sheltered.

(h) PPPC is way in favor of more pet parks! We strongly agree to SPCA's take on this and hope to have an integrated green park allowing both humans and dogs to enter. However, enforcement and a park ranger must be on site at all times to regulate and maintain hygiene i.e. make sure that the poo is disposed off properly. Poo bags, water tanks and dustbins must be readily available. A large area where dogs can be off leash must be fenced all around to prevent dogs from escaping and to have ease of control/management between humans and dogs.

(k) Allowing pets in schools and hospitals can be educational and therapeutic for many and should be a consideration to allow this to occur.

Animal Rights Hong Kong

We are pleased to see that Hong Kong Legco is finally stepping up to focus on improving animal rights in Hong Kong. This is great for animal organizations in Hong Kong as well as to us and many pet owners (especially the point to build more pet parks, which is extremely scarce at this moment).

Pitter Patter Pet Care hopes that these points put forward will actually be implemented as there is a rising number of pet owners as well as stray animals. Pease don't buy your pet from pet shops or breeders, adopt from HKDR or SPCA!

Dog Walking : "Pelos"

Pelos is an adorable 5 months old rescued dog who is a little bit nervous of large trucks but curious about every dog, person and sound. When first meeting her she just got neutered and had a buster collar on. Her walk was not so fun at first, scraping and banging it every where, yet Pelos never fails to show confidence in her stride, walking as if she is like a show horse even though she has this unattractive satellite dish around her neck!

Over the weekend the lamp shade finally came off and she was free! So free that today she was so excited to see me that she peed on the apartment flooring twice, whoops! Still having the tendency to pee in the apartment, I gave some advice to the owner to help them overcome this problem. She is at a curious and still playful stage, stopping at least 20 times during our hour walk to look around, smell and hear things around. Pelos is a real trooper!!

What's that!
